Research & Innovation
We emphasize the rigor and innovation necessary to bring excellence to our scholarship and to underscore the efficacy of our shared values.
The College of Arts & Letters commits itself to supporting the research and creative activities of our students, faculty, and staff. By engaging the world around us and coming to know that world more deeply, we create new knowledge and new opportunities for both knowing and being known.
The arts, letters, and humanities have a long history of rigor in research and creative activities; we are students of science, of language, of creation, and of culture. The College of Arts & Letters recognizes and celebrates this tradition of excellence and expands it to welcome non-western and non-traditional methods of research and creation. Importantly, we also want to limit obstacles for participating in research and creative activities; removing barriers for student and staff engagement in these practices is as crucial as ensuring our faculty are at the top of their fields.
By expanding support for research and creative activities, we make meaningful steps toward ensuring a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community whose contributions can be amplified. Through our engagement with research and innovation, we hope to elevate the findings, creations, stories, and ways of knowing that bring so much joy and meaning to the world around us.
"Research for social justice expands and improves the conditions for justice; it is an intellectual, cognitive and moral project, often fraught, never complete, but worthwhile."
