Engaged Pedagogy & Practice

We cultivate reciprocal, engaged learning experiences that transform lives.

"Tell me: What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?"

Mary Oliver

The College of Arts & Letters considers the above question, written by poet Mary Oliver, directly with our focus area of Engaged Pedagogy & Practice:

  • What are our students doing?
  • How is what we ask students, faculty, and staff to do creating our college’s culture?
  • What experiences and opportunities do people need to have to be fulfilled, prepared, and successful?
  • How can we maximize the potential and impact of a person’s wild and precious time as part of the College of Arts & Letters?

When we think about Engaged Pedagogy & Practice, we think about things ranging from experiential learning (where students get the chance to learn-by-doing, via internships or special opportunities) to how we can better support both student and faculty-led research to how we can innovate in both our classrooms and our office settings to ensure equitable, meaningful support and experiences for our CAL community.

In short, this theme area prompts us to consider the experience of being part of the College of Arts & Letters and how we can better ensure that this experience embraces students during their time on campus, prepares them for fulfilling careers and futures, and does the same for our faculty and staff.

Objectives

Empower students to create the future they imagine for themselves

through connecting students to dual majors and professional opportunities.

Grow our resources and reach

through creating innovative programming and funding pathways.

Commit to accountability and action

through positioning student success and career preparedness at the heart of our curriculum.

Develop faculty and staff cohesion

through generating trainings and resources that involve faculty in experiential learning, internship, and student labor processes.

Innovate how staff work is represented

through revising human resources language to better reflect the changing workforce and the skill-sets of our team.
